Announcements
January 27, 2025
Sharon Shoemaker announced that some $32,000 of donations have already been collected for the 2025 Big Night event to be held February 22 at El Macero Country Club.  Donna Prebys has already hosted several Big Night  Committee meetings and more such meetings are planned.  Dave Macho is collecting bottles of wine or $25 contributions for a wine collection to be auctioned off at Big Night.  Bonnie Plummer is collecting raffle prizes for Big Night – she wants here
to receive or assemble baskets of goods. Kay Resler is taking a head count for the Valentine’s Day meeting to be held February 10.  Donna Prebys reported on the recent Rotary district conference.   J.D. Denton announced the Meals on Wheels schedule noting that there had been some changes.
Draw of the day: Brian Horsfield had the winning ticket but did not draw the Joker so the pot of $798 continues to grow.
Birthdays and anniversaries:  None of the birthday people were present.  Alan Telford told of his wedding 52 years ago in England.  Bob Crow is a California native having been born in Salinas.   We wished Richard Rose a happy birthday in absentia; likewise Ben and Lynette Hart celebrated a wedding anniversary- congratulations.   Yvonne Clinton joined our club 17 years ago.  Marilyn Mansfield was her sponsor.

Sergeant’s Report
Bruce Hartsough
Bruce had a day off since we had 2 programs as described below.
.     .   .
Today’s Program #1 featured  Jack Jacobs the president of the UCD Rotaract Club.  He was joined by several other Rotaractors as our guests today.  He was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow at 2 years of age as his father was a Rotarian.  Being familiar with Rotary, Jack has helped to revive the Rotaract Club since there were only 3 returning members from last year.   Before COVID the UCD club typically had 40 to 50 members; to attract new members, Jack had a banner on the UCD quad and used graphics on Instagram to advertise the club.   They now have about 25 members.  Jack noted club members have come from widely varied backgrounds and that many academic majors are represented with the members.   As such he and others
meet people who he would not otherwise have a chance to meet.  Service activities have included a trash pickup in downtown Davis.  He stated that the 2024 Baby Big Night was a nice success and the club is planning the 2025 event to happen in early May.
Today’s Program # 2 featured Gautam Gandhi, M.D. who is board certified in the fields of internal medical and gastroenterology.  A passion of his is the “breath of life” noting that the record for a person going without breathing is 24 minutes underwater.  So what is the big deal about breathing?  For one thing deep breathing has been known to be a stress reliever for some 3000 years.  Slow breathing induces tranquility into our systems.  Our bodies self- regulate breathing to some degree causing us to take about 12 breaths per minute or 17,000 breaths every 24 hours.  If we live to age 100, we will take in some 620,000,000 breaths.  Dr. Gandhi stressed the importance of breathing through our nose instead of breathing through our mouth.  Our noses contain tiny hairs that strain out dust and other impurities before any damage can be done while breathing through our mouth offers no such benefit.   Ideally we breathe through our nose during sleep; if we breathe through our mouth we tend to have a dry mouth condition that then requires us to drink water at night which in turn leads to noisy breathing and poor quality of sleep.   Most of us tend to breathe through our mouths if we are exercising but Dr. Gandhi noted one distance runner who breathes through his nose.  There are many benefits of slow deep breathing.  We normally think of nitric acid as toxic but our bodies naturally produce some nitric acid which has been shown to interact with our blood in beneficial ways.
